The Two Swords of Miri and Piri

Following his father's martyrdom, the 11-year-old Guru donned two swords instead of the traditional woolen cord. He declared one sword represented 'Miri' (Temporal Power) and the other 'Piri' (Spiritual Authority), signaling that Sikhs would henceforth be armed to defend the oppressed.
